Bike riding can be a great experience for families. It is much faster than walking and you can concentrate on the sights as you ride. Bikes are almost like cars in that you can have a back seat for the little one if you need it and there are several different models to choose from.
If your family has trouble getting exercise, a family bike ride is one way to accomplish that. Not only will your heart rate increase as you pedal up and down hills, but your lower body gets the workout of a lifetime. Larger muscles are always the hardest to reshape. Bike riding challenges those muscles with each rotation.
In order to have a good time, safety has to be observed first. Once everyone knows the safety measures they need to follow, the ride becomes more pleasant. Accidents can happen, so be prepared.
1. Wear a helmet. This cannot be stressed enough. Many bike riders die from head injuries suffered because they were not wearing a helmet. Find an appropriately sized helmet for every member of the family. A loose fitting helmet won’t protect you as well and could even fly off, leaving your head totally unprotected.
2. Observe the traffic rules. You no longer ride against the flow of traffic on a bike. Bike riders ride with traffic just like a car or motorcycle. Keep the children in the middle of the pack with the adults in front and behind.
3. Choose a safe area to ride. Many bike riders do ride with traffic but there are parks with bike courses and also your own neighborhood. As few cars around as possible decreases the risk of crashes and the types of injuries they cause.
4. Take along bike maintenance supplies. The terrain may be rocky or worse. If a flat occurs you don’t want to be left walking your bike. Include items like an extra inner tube, air pump, tire patches, etc. Fit your bikes with reflectors for riding in the evening.
5. Add a bike rack. This can be used to hold your bike supplies and a backpack for snacks, water bottles and a first aid kit. Riding with a backpack on your back can unbalance you and the sudden shifts in weight can cause an accident.
Bike riding is fun for the entire family. It provides exercise (in disguise) and time to talk and bond with each other.
